What Is Ultrasonic Mist Therapy?
Ultrasonic mist therapy (also called low-frequency non-contact ultrasound) uses sound waves far below the audible range to treat chronic wounds. A handheld device converts electrical energy into ultrasonic vibrations, which are transmitted into the wound via a continuous saline mist — never touching the wound directly.
The acoustic energy creates a phenomenon called cavitation — microscopic bubbles that form and collapse at incredible speed within the wound fluid. This mechanical action physically disrupts the biofilm matrix that shelters wound bacteria, debrides non-viable tissue, and simultaneously triggers a cascade of biological healing signals at the cellular level.

Ultrasound Generation
A handheld transducer generates low-frequency ultrasound waves (25–40 kHz) — far lower than diagnostic ultrasound — specifically calibrated for wound care. This frequency range maximizes tissue penetration and biofilm disruption.
Saline Mist Delivery
The ultrasound energy is delivered to the wound through a fine saline mist — never direct contact. The mist acts as a coupling medium, transmitting acoustic energy evenly across the entire wound surface without pressure or pain.
Biofilm Disruption
The acoustic cavitation effect — microscopic bubbles forming and collapsing in the fluid — physically disrupts bacterial biofilm. Biofilm is a protective matrix bacteria construct to resist antibiotics and immune cells; breaking it exposes bacteria to your body's defenses.

- Compression remains the cornerstone of venous ulcer care
Pressure Injuries
- Can be considered in select wounds
- Pressure relief, repositioning, support surfaces, nutrition, and infection control remain foundational
Surgical & Traumatic Wounds
- Appropriate for select wounds, especially if stalled, contaminated, or with slough/debris
- Surgical complications still require surgeon coordination when needed
Osteomyelitis Wounds
- For wounds with suspected deeper infection or osteomyelitis, ultrasonic mist therapy may support care of the overlying wound bed
- Bone infection requires diagnostic workup, cultures, antibiotics, imaging, and specialist coordination
Non-Healing Chronic Wounds
- Select chronic wounds that are not progressing despite standard care
